Day 1: still at the hospital :(
Yesterday, was the big surgery and it sounds like it went well. Some bruising, pain killers through an epidural, and pretty much a drugged up little greyhound.
Just spoke with her surgeon this morning, she wants to keep here there another day/ night at the hospital.
Her vital signs are good, no bleeding from the suture site and she is eating but there is some bruising on her bum/ other leg that they want to monitor. Dr. Atilla said that some bruising is typical on the other leg, but because shes a greyhound they want to watch her. She is on amicar (for blood clotting)b and we started her on this the day before surgery.
Apparently she also got up on her own and walked assisted with her sling a distance. She didnt make it outside because she was too tired.
We plan to go see her later today and well let you know if there is any other news. I know that its likely the best that she stay another day if she isnt mobile and peeing outside, but its killing me that my baby isnt home yet. 🙁
How long did everyone else’s tripawd need to stay in the hospital?
So glad to hear that Marlie’s surgery went well. That’s a huge relief for everyone. Your vet is being cautious and caring by keeping her another day. It’s nice that you can go and visit.
Our Hunter only stayed one night, but they said he was above average. So I’m sure a lot of pets need some extra time to recover from this kind of major surgery. I’m sure she’s in really good hands. She will be in our prayers.
Please keep us posted.
Love and Labby kisses from Hunter and family.
I’m only three days in with my cat, Fang, but I can totally relate to the anxiety you’re feeling. It really probably is better for her to stay another day if the vet thinks so – she’ll just be that much more happy to see you when she gets home! 🙂 Chin up!
Glad to hear Marlie is out of surgery and on the road to recovery. Our Max had his amputation surgery the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 2008. Since both my husband and I worked, we didn’t pick him up until Wednesday afternoon. We didn’t necessarily like leaving him there, but we knew he was being watched like a hawk, and we didn’t want to leave him at home alone. Don’t worry, your girl will be back home with you before you know it!
Zambor was operated on yesterday just as Marlie. He is a Dogue de Bordeaux so he is a little bigger. He normally should come home tomorrow but if necessary he will remain in the hospital.
I went to see him today, I hope Marlie will do as well as my big boy. They do get very tired after a very little walk, but they are heavily sedated and still have to find their balance.
We will both learn how our tripods evolve after their amputation and I am very glad that I have all the other members here to support us.
We have to be brave for our sweethearts;

It is so tough when you want them to be able to come home and they just can’t yet. It will be soon, though! Glad to hear Marlie’s surgery went well. Be prepared for a few bumps in the road back at home. The first couple of weeks are rough, but it DOES get better!

I hope Marlie’s doing well and all the above comments are right it’s a shock to the system, and there will be small victories along the way. So treasure each hurdle and win and rely on the thought that she is out of pain which in itself is a wonderful feeling 🙂
Take care and love to Marlie and all
